Massage is the application of manual techniques to the soft tissue to mobilise them to maintain flexibility. Massage is especially effective in breaking compensatory pain postures and patterns. For example, a tension headache is often self-sustaining because the pain makes the person clench the affected muscles even harder, which, in turn, creates more pain. A thorough neck and shoulder massage can reduce muscle tension and break the pain cycle.

Modern studies have shown that massage can be used to successfully treat a variety of disorders, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Arthritis
  • Back or neck pain
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Chronic pain
  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Headache
  • High blood pressure
  • Insomnia

Remedial Massage

Remedial Massage is the application of a range of therapeutic techniques, used to treat muscles that are knotted, tense, stiff, or damaged. The remedial therapist will assess and identify which areas of the body require treatment, and use a range of massage-based techniques to optimise muscle function.

A Remedial Massage therapist uses systematic assessment and treatment of the muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues of the body, to assist in pain, injury and rehabilitation. To understand how to treat patients, a remedial therapist must know anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology.

A Full Body Massage

A full body massage can be done in any style dependent on your personal goals and tolerance for...discomfort. We won't lie - a massage can be challenging for muscles that experience a lot of pressure and strain. But we can promise that massages can significantly improve your mobility and flexibility. Where do you think "no pain, no gain" came from?

A massage for the entire body is a wholesome experience. It takes into account the key pressures points throughout the body - the head and neck, the shoulders, spine and lower back, the legs and feet. It can even include a massage of the hands to improve your dexterity and combat issues like arthritis. Sometimes you don't know how sore you are until the pain melts away.

The benefits of a full body massage are unrivalled when it comes to natural treatments. A massage is also great for your skin. An increase in circulation can enhance the appearance of your skin for more defined, smoother skin with a natural flush. Massage works with the body's flow to flush toxins from the system leading to a clearer and more even complexion.

Pregnancy Massage

Benefits of ante-natal massage:

When done effectively, helps to reduce stress hormones within a pregnant woman's body. It also increases the levels of hormones which tend to be low in women who are depressed.

It leads to a reduction in anxiety and free floating concerns. There is often an improvement in general mood following a massage.

Pregnant women often find a massage rejuvenates their energy because it gives them an opportunity to rest and completely relax.

For some pregnant women, massage can relieve nausea and heartburn. In others, it can make these worse.

Relieves the everyday discomforts of pregnancy such as an aching neck, sore back, and heaviness in the pelvic bones, leg cramps, swelling of the ankles and feet and oedema (fluid retention).

Leads to muscle relaxation and relief of joint pain. Pregnancy massage can be particularly helpful for women who experience sciatic nerve pain.

Builds a sense of connection with another person as well as building a rapport. Many pregnant women experience a change in their intimate relationship with their partner and suffer from being touch deprived.

Pregnancy massage may improve the progression of labour with better health outcomes for both the mother and her baby. More relaxed mothers may have a lower risk of interventions during labour and birth.

Pregnancy massage can provide an opportunity for women to completely stop what they are doing and focus on the pleasure of having someone else do something just for them. Improved sleep due to feeling less muscle tension and generally less uncomfortable.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage targets chronic tension in muscles that lie far below the body's surface. Deep muscle techniques involve slow strokes, direct pressure or friction movements that go across the muscle grain.

When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by

physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement.

Massage therapists will use their fingers, thumbs or occasionally even elbows to apply the needed pressure. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. Some of the same strokes are used as classic massage but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain.

Unlike classic massage therapy, which is used for relaxation, deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as: chronic pain, limited mobility, recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury), repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis pain, fibromyalgia, and muscle spasms.

Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic drainage, a technique originating in the 20th century, enhances lymph fluid movement, reducing swelling and improving detoxification. This gentle massage supports immune function and circulation. Lymphatic drainage benefits individuals with lymphedema, chronic pain, and those recovering from surgery. Regular sessions improve skin health, reduce cellulite, and promote muscle recovery. Self-lymphatic drainage is feasible but should be done under professional guidance. Proper hydration and diet enhance its effects. Despite myths, it doesn’t directly cause weight loss or serve as a quick fix, but contributes to overall health and well-being.

Lomi Lomi Massage (a traditional Hawaiian and Polynesian massage)

Let’s start with the definition of the word ‘Lomi.’ Essentially, it means to shift/move/rub/soothe. The movements have been likened to when a cat happily kneads its paws, purring away!

You can think of this type of massage as a healing practice that releases blockages, promotes circulation, and shifts energy. It may also be called a ‘loving hands massage’ or simply a ‘Lomi massage.’

According to legend, the Lomi Lomi massage originated in Polynesia and came to Hawaii when the Polynesians settled there. As prescribed by the Polynesian elders, who were the community leaders, these massages were only performed by trained healers and were part of a spiritual event.

This form of massage could go on for hours (or even days!) and was meant to induce a deeper connection with the divine. In its current form, Lomi Lomi massages in Australia are typically available in spas and are freely available for anyone to book. In Hawaii, the wellness of the physical body is considered equal to mental and emotional wellness. Therefore, any treatment for the body must also consider the mental and emotional aspects.

For this reason, a Lomi Lomi massage often involves gentle prayers for your wellbeing. Even if you are not religious, many people report that the prayers are extremely calming and soothing, not just for the body but for the soul too. The massage therapists view themselves as enablers rather than healers, per se. They perform the massage to remove any physical and emotional blockages in order for your healing to begin. The practice is viewed as a spiritual way of reconnecting and encouraging recovery.

Salt Body Scrub and Relax Massage

5 benefits of salt scrub may not know

1. Skin Glow

One of the biggest benefits to salt scrubs, particularly the salt scrub, is the glow that your skin is left with. There are different grades of salt, and sea salt is the best option for a salt glow. The results for your body will depend on the type and grade of salt you or your spa technician uses.

2. Exfoliating

It might seem like an obvious benefit to mention, but body scrubs are a great way to exfoliate dead skin cells. This paves the way for fresh new cells to regenerate and leaves you looking and feeling fabulous. Planning a body scrub for exfoliating benefits is best in the fall and spring, right before you start to tan and when your tan starts to fade. Of course, exfoliating is great any time. If you have sensitive skin, it’s best to stick with sugar or herbal body scrubs. Otherwise, salt scrubs are great for exfoliation.

3. Increasing Flow

When you get a salt scrub or give one to yourself, you are encouraging the natural flow of circulation and bodily fluids within. For the best results a professional should recommend and apply the body scrub that is appropriate for you. When you have a professional massage therapist apply the salt scrub, a massage can be incorporated. This will increase the correct circulation and flow benefits massage.

4. Improve Cellulite and Aging

There are some claims that certain types of body scrubs can actually improve the look of aging and dimpled skin from cellulite. There is no miracle cure, but it certainly won’t hurt to try a salt scrub that is enhanced with coffee. The coffee grounds are the best option for use on cellulite prone areas of the body. These types of salt scrubs are great if you love the smell of coffee, too.

5. Relaxation

Treating yourself with a salt scrub, especially when combined with a massage, is just plain relaxing. Having a salt scrub done by a professional allows you to incur the benefit without the mess or stress. Plus, when you have a choice of essential oils to add to your salt scrub, the effects are even more potent. Lavender is a great choice because of its known relaxing qualities. There may be other scents that you find relaxing, so be sure to ask if essential oils can be incorporated.

Hot Stone

Hot stone massage is a type of therapeutic treatment in which heated stones are either placed on specific points along the body or used as a massaging tool with steady soothing pressure to achieve therapeutic benefits.

It is extremely effective in treating extremely tense muscles. The basic purpose of using hot stones before the hands-on massage therapy is to loosen the extremely tense muscle so that a therapist is able to provide a deeper and more relaxing massage without inflicting excessive pain. The weight and warmth from the hot stones penetrate slowly into the soft tissue of the body in a way that can’t be achieved by massage alone. The hands-on massage techniques used in hot stone massage are the same as those used in a regular massage.

Hot stone massage is very effective in treating many physiological conditions, including muscular tension, muscular pain, edema and inflammation. It is particularly effective during cold weather, as our bodies need to work harder to maintain homeostasis, or a stable, internal environment, including a constant body temperature.

The primary goal of hot stone massage is vasodilation, or the expansion of blood vessels, which increases blood flow and the movement of oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. This helps the function of our major systems, including: the central nervous, muscular, and lymphatic systems. Increased circulation also increases joint mobility by lengthening muscle fibres and connective tissue.

Hot stone and remedial massage also assist the body to utilise energy more efficiently, improving overall metabolic processes and functions. This has many benefits, including maintaining a healthy metabolism and immune system, which assists the body’s defence against infection, including colds and flu, and supporting overall general health.

Additionally, the specific placement of the stones during a session, provides a targeted release of specific muscles and trigger points. As a result, hot stones in conjunction with remedial massage also assists in the reduction of stress and anxiety levels, improving sleep quality.Under the Mind Body Spirit Banner, inc the attached Hypno:
